Two arrested after gun found inside stolen vehicle at James Smith Cree Nation

Sep 22, 2023 | 7:00 AM

Nearly a dozen charges have been laid and two people arrested, following an incident earlier this week at James Smith Cree Nation.

On Tuesday, at approximately 7:30 a.m., Melfort RCMP received a report of armed individuals.

James Smith Cree Nation security personnel had observed a vehicle with two occupants, and they claimed a firearm was visible inside the vehicle.

Officers immediately responded and soon found the suspect vehicle. A firearm was in fact located and seized.

The investigation determined the vehicle had been reported stolen to Prince Albert RCMP on Aug. 31. The plate affixed to it did not match the vehicle.

An 18-year-old man from Sturgeon Lake First Nation has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime, as well as various charges related to guns and failure to comply with a probation order.

A 23-year-old woman from James Smith Cree Nation has been charged with possession of property obtained by crime, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and unsafe storage of a firearm.

In response to Tuesday’s incident, and the proximity of the suspects, a local school enacted its hold and secure protocols.

Melfort RCMP are thanking James Smith Cree Nation Security for their assistance in the investigation.
