Former Town of Battleford CAO suspect in international homicide investigation

Jun 29, 2023 | 2:50 PM

There appears to be a Battleford connection to a homicide investigation in Bangladesh.

According to the English edition of the Bangladesh Post, Canadian expatriate Afroza Begum was found deceased in the South Asian country on May 31. She had been reported to police as a missing person just days before her body was found buried in the sand. Bangladesh media said Begum’s husband, Ashraful Alam, is allegedly one of the suspects in the case and is wanted by police.

Alam is the former chief administrative officer (CAO) for the town of Battleford. He was removed from his position earlier this month after he failed to return from a temporary leave to attend to family matters overseas.

Investigators believe Alam fled to Canada, but his whereabouts are unknown.

When battlefordsNOW contacted Saskatchewan RCMP about the matter, they had ‘no information to provide at this time’ but stated in an email that they assist other law enforcement agencies with their investigations upon request, including locating wanted individuals.

battlefordsNOW also sent queries to Interpol several times but has not received a response.
