Town of Battleford dealing with ice-covered roads

The Town of Battleford, like many parts of the Battlefords, is challenged with hard sheets of ice on the roads in a number of places.

Coun. David George raised the issue at Battleford town council’s meeting Monday, saying he received some calls from people asking if the roads will be scraped soon, to remove some of the ice build up.

“Our explanation to the people of the town of Battleford is that it’s so cold out right now that it’s just not worth wrecking something [equipment] to get these roads cleaned up,” he said. “As soon as the weather warms a bit, I’ve been assured they [workers] will be out getting them scraped and back down to where they probably should be.”

Following the meeting, Mayor Ames Leslie echoed George’s comments.

“The ice is pretty rotted and it’s frozen hard,” he said. “So, right now for our graders to go out and blade that down, it doesn’t really do anything but make them [the roads] more slippery, or it even can damage some of the equipment.”

Leslie said the town will try to time the work to when it gets a little bit warmer outside. That way, crews will be able to get onto the roads to break down some of the ice with more success, to get the ice down to a level where it’s closer to the pavement itself.

“We just ask for a little bit more patience,” Leslie said.

Environment Canada reports temperatures in the Battlefords are expected to gradually become slightly less frigid by the weekend, according to the seven-day forecast. Temperatures were to be as low as -31 C with the wind chill for March 6. However, by March 12, they are forecast to warm up a little to a high of -5, based on an early outlook.
