Discovery Co-op named Business of the Year at BBEX Awards

Nov 10, 2022 | 4:12 AM

It was an exciting time for many businesses and individuals honoured at the Battlefords Chamber of Commerce’s 28th Battlefords Business Excellence (BBEX) Awards Gala Wednesday.

Among the highlights of the night, Discovery Co-op Ltd. took home the top honours for the Business of the Year Award.

Discovery Co-op general manager Mike Nord was emotional when he accepted the award for the company.

“I was very surprised and shocked that we won, because there are so many good businesses here,” he said. “I’m very excited about it.”

Nord said this year marks 90 years in business for Discovery Co-op.

“Ninety years ago, 91 farmers came together because they heard about this new co-operative movement, and started the co-op here in the Battlefords,” he said. “Each of them put down $500 a piece in the dirty ’30s, in 1932. In today’s dollars, that’s over $10,000 a piece. That’s something, that they believed in it so much to create the co-op. And here we are today, 90 years later, very successful and still growing, and I am hopeful for another 90 years.”
