Royal Canadian Legion Battleford Branch No. 9 will hold a service to mark Remembrance Day on Friday to honour all veterans.

During Town of Battleford council’s meeting Monday, Mayor Ames Leslie gave an update on the events planned.

The Legion Branch No. 9 will host an in-person ceremony at 10:45 a.m. on Nov. 11 at St. Vital Catholic School Gym in Battleford.

“It’s the first one we held in person, open to the public in many years,” Mayor Ames Leslie said. “Hopefully, that’s well attended.”

To start the day, there will be a march at 10:20 a.m. from the Legion building in town to St. Vital School for the service. After the ceremony, the Legion will hold a march to the local cenotaph, located across from Battleford Furniture.

A luncheon will follow at the Legion Hall, at 262-22 Street in Battleford.

As well, Leslie said the Legion Branch in Battleford will have a banquet gala after the ceremony in the evening.

“If anybody wants to attend, [they should] get hold of Legion No. 9,” Leslie said. “It promises to be a good time.”

Tickets must be purchased in advance for the catered banquet.

Leslie said the Town of Battleford is also taking the opportunity to recognize Nov. 8 as National Indigenous Veterans’ Day in Canada. The Town’s flags will be lowered to half-mast during the day to honour all the Indigenous friends and families who fought in the war.

Leslie said the town’s flags will be lowered again on Friday for Remembrance Day to recognize all the men and women who served in war.
