Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra coming to North Battleford

This Friday, the Saskatoon Symphony will be playing the Dekker Centre in a unique way.

They will be providing the musical score to a classic silent film. The movie, Nosferatu is described by the SSO’s CEO and Creative Director Mark Turner as the original vampire film.

“Most people when they think of the orchestra coming to town, they’re probably expecting probably like Vivaldi, or Mozart, or Beethoven. This time, we’re coming with a 1922 silent film horror movie.”

This year, the film is 100 years old. Nosferatu is widely regarded as an influential film for its time and one of the great horror movies to come out of the silent film era.

Turner says they’ve played alongside this film before and audiences love it.

“Its such a cool experience to have live music with one of those films from the silver screen,” he said.

Brian Unverricht will conduct the SSO’s presentation for the tour. It turns out Mr. Unverricht is a bit of a Halloween buff and he’s really looking forward to the show.

“The music is thrilling,” Unverricht said. “The tone of the strings is rough and haunting, almost a screeching sound. It’s really spooky.”

The symphony and film are in town for one night only at the Dekker Centre, Friday, Oct. 21, at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are still available. The SSO will be in Lloydminster on Thursday night and in Saskatoon Saturday for two shows. There will be a matinee in Melfort Sunday.
