Man released from hospital after RCMP-involved shooting

Oct 15, 2022 | 4:15 PM

A 49-year-old man from the Little Pine First Nation was released from hospital after a Saskatchewan RCMP-involved shooting that happened overnight.

Shortly after 1:30am, Cut Knife RCMP received three separate from the First Nation about the man and they all were saying different things. The first call was about an assault, the second was about him pointing a firearm at the local security, and the third was an abandoned call saying that a man with a gun was thinking about suicide.

When police arrived, they found the man with a gun outside of a home and attempted to disarm and arrest him. The attempted arrest ended up with a gun going off and the man getting injured.

Officers provided first-aid until paramedics arrived where they took him to a local hospital. The injured man was treated and released from hospital a few hours later into police custody.

Police were able to find the gun that the man was carrying, and no officers were injured in the arrest.

As per the RCMP Act, when a serious incident, such as a police-involved shooting, occurs involving the RCMP, an investigation is required by an external agency. In this situation, the Saskatoon Police Service and the Saskatchewan Serious Incident Response Team will investigate at the request of the Saskatchewan RCMP.

The Saskatchewan RCMP has requested the Ministry of Justice and Attorney General appoint independent investigation observers, including one Indigenous observer.
