City to start work on Territorial Drive expansion project

Sep 9, 2022 | 5:09 PM

Drivers can expect to see some delays around Territorial Drive and 100 Street starting Monday as the city begins work on its planned expansion initiative.

The Territorial Drive project, eastbound lane improvements, was approved by council as part of the City of North Battleford’s 2022 capital projects.

The project is needed to improve safety and traffic flow in the area.

Motorists will have to reduce their speeds around construction sites as road crews will be working during the day and evening while the project is underway.

The work is expected to take about five weeks to complete.

The intersections at Territorial Drive and Kildeer Drive/95 Street, and Territorial Drive/100 Street (Highway 4) will both be impacted during the construction period.

Territorial Drive will be affected at the entrances to Sobeys and Discovery Co-op. The city will announce alternate access points when they have been decided.

The work for the project includes changes to lane layouts, curbing, paving, and accessibility improvements for the Territorial Drive/100 Street (Highway 4) intersection.

Street lighting will be relocated to accommodate construction, and crews will install a new set of traffic lights at the entrances to Sobeys and Discovery Co-op on Territorial Drive as part of the project.

Drivers will need to note that Territorial Drive traffic will be restricted to one lane only during the daytime for part of this construction period. As well, there will be no left-turn out of Sobeys or out of Discovery Co-op for periods of time.

The city said traffic barriers will be shifting as the work progresses, so motorists are asked to pay close attention to signage. Road crews will be working on this project both during the day and nighttime to reduce the length of the construction period and lessen traffic disruption for the public. Speeds will be reduced and posted in work zones.

Drivers are asked to comply with all posted speed limits for the safety of road crews, pedestrians, and other motorists. The city notes that under the Provincial Traffic Safety Act, fines for speeding in construction zones are as follows: 10 km/h over posted speed limit = $360 fine, 20 km/h over posted speed limit = $440 fine, 30 km/h over posted speed limit = $857 fine.

“The City of North Battleford thanks the public for their cooperation and patience while this work is completed to enhance roadways in our city,” read a statement from the city.
