City awards contracts for Sobeys intersection upgrades

The Sobeys intersection in North Battleford will see some improvements this fall to make the area safer.

City council awarded two contracts for the project at Monday’s meeting, as recommended by administration.

For the ground work, council awarded the 2022 capital project for the Territorial Drive expansion to K&S Asphalt Services in the amount of $607,181, which includes PST.

The contract for the new traffic signal system design, supply, and installation work went to Can-Traffic Services Ltd. in the amount of $330,612, including PST.

The project will involve creating a new set of lights between the Sobeys and the Discovery Co-op intersection.

“This is in line with the work that had been done with the transportation master plan,” corporate services director, Jennifer Niesink, said.

The new lights will allow for in-and-out, right and left traffic movement.

“We would also be looking to add some laneways to the intersection along Hwy. 4 N., to the east of that intersection,” Niesink said. “This will improve traffic flow coming from the east and going north, and create some safer turns all around there. So [there will be] overall new lanes and an expansion to the previous ones, adding the laneways to create safer traffic flow through the entire area.”

The full cost of the project is estimated at just over $1 million with the province covering a portion of that amount.

The work is expected to be done sometime in September.
