Building permits up

New apartment building coming to North Battleford

Jul 21, 2022 | 10:24 AM

North Battleford residents will soon see a new apartment building in the Fairview Heights area.

The four-storey, 54-unit complex is being built at 2424 Buhler Avenue, close to Territorial Drive Alliance Church.

City communications administrator, Dustin Tungilik MacDonald, said in an email to battlefordsNOW there is no schedule on the completion date at this point.

“That is determined by their contractors and their schedule, but these large buildings typically take upwards of a year to complete.”

City director of corporate services, Jennifer Niesink, said during council’s meeting a building permit for this project is reflected in the June 2022 numbers.

“That was an eight-million-dollar [valued] build, so we’re very excited to see that on the report.”

Aside from this project, another big development shown in the latest Building Permit Report is for a larger-sized new industrial building being constructed — the second phase of the Co-op fertilizer storage facility, which is a $1,295,400 valued project.

“It’s overall a very good month for building permits,” Niesink said.

Asked by council when was the last time the city saw a brand new for-rent apartment building being constructed, Niesink said she believes it may have been as far back as the early 1990s.

Coun. Greg Lightfoot was pleased to learn of the development.

“It’s good to see,” he said. “I’m glad to see that apartment [building] going up. It is going to fill the void.”

The city’s Building Permit Report for the month of June 2022 shows seven permits were taken out for a total value of $9,519,400. That’s a big increase from June 2021, which shows six permits issued for a value of $207,000.

Looking at the year-to-date ending June 2022, the city had 54 permits taken out for a total value of $20,470,300. That is more than twice the value of projects from the same period in 2021 when 51 permits were issued for a total value of $9,520,600.
