City adopts new mill rate; tax notices to be sent out

North Battleford city council formally adopted the new mill rate at its meeting this week so tax notices will be sent out soon.

Council adopted the mill rate to reflect a 5.11 per cent tax increase to the average assessed property, as approved in the city’s 2022 municipal budget.

Administration requires council’s approval for the 2022 property tax mill rates for the city to issue its tax notices.

Director of finance, Brent Nadon, presented the report at this week’s council meeting.

The uniform municipal mill rate will be set at 15.653 for taxable property in the city for 2022, an increase from the 2021 rate of 14.752.

For the average residential property with a taxable value of $160,800, homeowners will face an average increase of 4.35 per cent. That increase is made up of $51.14 for the uniform mill rate factor. The residential base tax makes up another $37.87. So in total properties will see a $89.01 average increase.

The actual adjustment to property owners’ taxes will depend on the assessment value of their property.

For the average commercial property with a taxable value of $396,355, it will see an average increase of about 3.94 per cent. That is made up entirely of the uniform mill rate factor increase.

There is no increase to the recreation capital levy or UPAR for residential and commercial properties.

Council approved the bylaw to establish the mill rate factors for the 2022 year.

It also authorized the levying of the uniform tax rate, to establish the minimum tax and base taxes within the city’s business improvement district for 2022.

As well, council approved a bylaw to establish a separate sub-class under the commercial tax classification for personal care homes.
