A busy construction season continues in North Battleford

Work at the intersection of 102nd Street and Railway Avenue will keep the street closed to through traffic until paving is completed. This expected to take until 7:00 p.m. tonight.

In a written response to questions from battlefordsNOW, the city said the construction season is progressing well, though the 102nd Street project is behind by one or two weeks. Ryan Mackrell, assistant Director of corporate services, said this is due to weather conditions.

“We were unable to start at the beginning of May as anticipated due to the frost in the ground and hate to wait until after May long weekend,” he said. “The contractor is catching up and we anticipate the project will be completed within the current season.”

There’s also crew patching on the 1300 block of 110th Street. Residents are advised to find alternate routes if possible, as this will take until around 5:00 p.m.

The 102nd Street project is the largest work item for the city, with underground infrastructure, roadways, and sidewalks all being replaced along with lead lines into buildings. Workers are also trying to best work with the businesses downtown affected by the lack of access for consumers.

There are several other projects of smaller scale underway as well. Contractors recently completed a pressure sustaining valve project to bring the water pressure up in a low pressure zone for 100th Street East up Douglas and around 20th Avenue and are also doing ongoing work hydrant replacements.

Mackrell also noted work on a water main connection project from Douglas Avenue to Pearson Avenue.

“This project will connect two key water mains to provide the neighbourhood and the city better flow, coverage and protection,” he said. “We are just working through preliminary construction details, but this is tentatively scheduled for this fall.”

Other upcoming projects include a 110th Street sidewalk project that still requires details, new aphalt on Territorial Drive and Highway 4 North and intersection upgrades on Territorial Drive and access to Discovery Co-op and Sobeys.

“This project is still in the tender stage, but will have a major impact to that area once completed.” Mackrell said.

According to the city, COVID-19 restrictions have not played a major role on any construction work, though that has contributed to supply shortages, which has affected costs and timelines.

“However, we are starting to notice this is getting better as time goes on as well,” Mackrell said.
