North Battleford Fire receiving new truck soon

The City of North Battleford and its Fire Department are expecting to receive a new pumper truck this fall.

Council authorized the purchase of the vehicle for almost $760,000 back in August of last year, through the Saskatchewan Urban Municipality Association’s Purchasing Program. The new truck will replace Engine 22, which is nearing its end of service life of 25 years this December, in the hopes of increasing reliability, lowering maintenance costs and improving firefighting capabilities.

Deputy Mayor Bill Ironstand said this is an exciting investment for the City.

“The North Battleford Fire Department (NBFD) will have an essential piece of equipment to assist them in serving the community and providing protection to lives and property for many years to come,” he said.

Rocky Mountain Phoenix is building the truck, which will have an expected service life of 20 years. The improved design of the new pumper truck also ensures future cost savings by removing the need to purchase the Fire Department an additional heavy rescue truck.

Lindsay Holm, Fire Chief and Director of Protective Services, thanked council for their support.

“This new equipment will provide our firefighters with the necessary equipment required to better serve and protect our community.”

Educational meet

The City was recently involved in discussions regarding the possibility of a new campus for North West College. Ironstand met with MLA Jeremy Cockrill and Advanced Education minister Gordon Wyant regarding that item and others, noting the City was pleased to undertake the conversation.

“City Council believes a new facility will only benefit the region as a whole,” Ironstand said.

The North West College, which recently celebrated the graduation of nearly 200 students, has a nearly 50-year history in the Battlefords and area, featuring a number of educational opportunities and training initiatives.
