Friedrich readies for competitive golf season

North Battleford’s Colby Friedrich is getting set to tee off on the competitive golf season.

Playing his first tournament July 1-3 at the Reliance Gregg’s Central Saskatchewan Amateur Golf Tournament in Saskatoon, Freidrich said he’s looking forward to getting back out there to compete at a high level once again, for the first time at this particular tournament.

“I haven’t been to this tournament before, and haven’t played the course, but I’ve got some other buddies who have, and I’m looking forward to it,” he said. “I’m just eager to play some competitive golf again.”

The July long weekend will mark Friedrich’s return to the competitive circuit for the first time since last October, when he and his teammates from Medicine Hat College took home a bronze medal at Nationals in Windsor, ON., at a tournament that also saw Friedrich place ninth individually.

Last year was a one of transition for Friedrich, as he advanced from the junior to senior men’s ranks last summer, before what was his first season of post-secondary golf in Medicine Hat; an experience the 20-year-old said has only given him increased confidence heading into this year.

“I think playing in Medicine Hat for the Rattlers last year helped boost my confidence a bit, and just playing in a couple of tournament rounds and playing more consistently really helped,” he said. “I’m looking forward to the summer, then heading back to school in the fall to see if we can build on that bronze medal at Nationals.

Following the Reliance Gregg’s Central Am, Friedrich will also be attending at least two more tournaments this summer, including the Saskatoon Men’s Amateur, July 9-10, and Amateur Men’s Championship in Prince Albert, July 12-15.
