RCMP Report: Impaired driving, assault arrests

May 19, 2022 | 12:45 PM

A woman from the Battlefords is facing multiple charges, after driving intoxicated with a small child in the vehicle.

Battlefords RCMP were alerted to an erratic driver on 102nd Street on Saturday morning when they were reportedly swerving all over the street and nearly rear-ended another vehicle. Police located the accused shortly after 10:30 a.m., along with an adult passenger and a small child that wasn’t secured in their seat. The 27-year-old female driver was arrested on scene, becoming combative with the officer.

As a result, she is charged with impaired driving, driving while over the legal limit for alcohol, assaulting a police officer, as well as several offences under the traffic safety act.

“If you have someone under 16 in your vehicle who is not properly strapped in, the driver is responsible,” Sgt. Neil Tremblay said.

Assaults

Among the 538 calls from the past week of service for the detachment was 16 assault investigations, which resulted in a few arrests.

Police responded to a report of an intoxicated male causing a disturbance on the 600 block of 104th Street the morning of May 11. The accused was located and became combative during the arrest before being taken into custody. Tremblay said he head-butted an officer in the chest while being taken into the vehicle.

The 21-year-old male is charged with resisting arrest and assaulting a police officer and will appear in Provincial Court on June 20.

Another report came from the 1100 block of 101st Street on Monday. The victim was punched in the abdomen by the accused, who was already on conditions of no contact due to a previous assault against the victim. The accused was located a short time later and arrested without incident.

“No one was seriously injured and this was part of an ongoing issue between the two,” Tremblay said.

The accused, 32-year-old Natasha Favel, is charged with assault and failing to comply with an undertaking. She has been held in custody and made her first appearance in court on Tuesday.

Lastly, charges are pending against a 43-year-old male following an incident on the 1200 block of 102nd Street on May 13. He reportedly became upset while at a business and threw a bottle of hand sanitizer at the victim before exiting the business and breaking two windows with rocks. He is from the North Battleford area.

Thefts

Break and enters continue to occur in the Battlefords, with several occurring in the city this week. Tremblay said the detachment is continuing to monitor each incident in case direct patterns.

“We’ve had B-and-E’s to several garages and sheds,” he said. “Seems to be a handful every week.”

“Whether it’s the same people or not is difficult to say.”

Calls include:

  • An active incident on the 1400 block of 100th Street Sunday morning, where an unknown 37-year-old male fled on foot. Police were able to set up containment of the area and the accused was located and arrested. The accused faces charges of resisting arrest, break and enter and possession of break and enter instruments.
  • Two men were arrested on Monday, when they were found in vacant home on the 1100 block of 98th Street. The pair, a 27-year-old and a 42-year-old, are charged with breaking and entering and have a court date in June.
  • A residence on the Saulteaux First Nation was reportedly broken into on May 12. Electronics and personal items were taken with damage to a door and windows also reported.

Other files

The detachment dealt with 15 mental health investigations, nine missing person’s reports (one active), seven traffic collisions, 73 various traffic charges and three individuals charged with impaired driving.

One 19-year-old is charged with carrying a concealed weapon, resisting arrest, possession with a weapon for a dangerous purpose and three counts of failing to comply with an undertaking. This stems from an attempted vehicle stop on 100th Street early Saturday morning, where a passenger fled from the vehicle and was taken into custody after a brief foot pursuit.

The suspect, Lorenz Paskimin, was found to be in possession of bear spray he had concealed. He was remanded into custody and made his first appearance on Monday.
