Installation of water pressure valves begins in North Battleford

May 9, 2022 | 3:59 PM

Water pressure is about to increase in North Battleford.

The City has notified the public of the installation of pressure sustaining water valves in three phases, starting Monday, affecting multiple streets. This is achieved by moving streets largely north of 20th Ave. by the Centennial Park neighbourhood from the Water Tower water pressure zone to the Fairview Heights Reservoir water pressure zone.

Director of City Operations Stewart Schafer said that the distinct difference in pressure is why they are moving these streets from the Water Tower zone.

“The water pressure is very low in those areas and that’s all the three pressure sustaining valves are going to do,” Schafer said. “Allow us to put them in the Fairview pressure zone.”

Streets being moved to a higher pressure zone include:

  • MacDonald Drive
  • Laurier Crescent
  • Borden Crescent
  • Douglas Ave
  • 101st Crescent
  • 102nd Crescent
  • 100th St. East Service Road

Schafer said this work will be done in phases, which have their own street closures and detours. Residents are asked to respect all barriers and limited access, intended for both worker and public safety.

“The valves open up at roughly 30 lbs psi, to bring water back and forth if one side drops to less than that,” Schafer said. “Then we move [the affected streets] into the higher zone.”

The schedule may change due to inclement weather, but the first phase begins today with the intersection of 102nd St. and 20th Ave, running until Wednesday. Street repaving will take place May 17.

Phase two covers the intersection of 101st St. and 20th Ave from Tuesday to Friday, while phase three concludes with the intersection from Friday to May 16. Street repaving for both sections will take place May 18.

Additionally, a directional waterline will be bored from 101st St. to 102nd Street as part of this project. This waterline will allow the area to maintain water supply from the Water Tower pressure zone, in the event of a water main break. The boring of this line will have a minimal impact on traffic.

Additionally, crews will bore a directional waterline from 101st St. to 102nd St. and Douglas Ave to 110th St. This is in order to maintain water supply from the Water Tower zone in the case of a break. Schafer said this won’t significantly impact traffic or residences.

“We’ll still be able to get water to most residences if we had a water main break on 101st or 102nd,” he said.

Water Flushing to commence

North Battleford residents are also about to have unidirectional water flushing take place in several sections of the City this evening. All residents living in these areas will need to shut off their taps from 7:00 p.m. – 7:00 a.m. Work may continue through the rest of the week.

A map of the affected streets is available online.
