Battlefords area artists inspired by rural living

A group of local artists turn their gaze to life on the farm, nature and the never-ending skies of the Prairies when they take up their brush.

Jean M. Dunn and Lorraine Voegeli from North Battleford, Kathy Smith from Battleford, and Grace Gerein from Unity are friends and artists exhibiting their work in an upcoming show in the area.

The “Art Symphony” show runs from April 22 to 24 at the Conference Room in the Comfort Inn in North Battleford.

Western-inspired scenes, rustic wagon wheels, and ancient artifacts inspire Gerein when she is deciding on the subjects for her pieces.

During the height of the pandemic she would find solace in her craft, solitary yet rewarding work. She retreated to her studio and let creativity be her guide.

“I was grateful that I am that way, that I can take time for [my projects] and enjoy it,” Gerein told battlefordsNOW. “There was lots of time, and more home time.”

She is glad to be able to show her work again, now that the province has opened up.

“It’s a pleasure,” Gerein said. “We’ve had a real long spell where we haven’t had [a show]. So we’re looking forward to it.”

An artist for over 30 years, Gerein said she enjoys working in watercolours, as well as acrylics and pastels for her paintings.

Fellow artist Dunn focuses on the delicate beauty of nature and wildlife in her work. She is also thrilled to exhibit her pieces in the community again.

“We have cancelled twice already through the last couple years, and this time we are going ahead with it. So it just feels terrific,” she told battlefordsNOW. “Really, what do we have as artists other than to show our [work]. It feels great to say we’re having our own show again, like we used to do.”

Some COVID-19 protocols may be in place for the show.
