The man who pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the Sequin Mooswa homicide investigation was originally scheduled for his sentencing hearing in North Battleford Provincial Court Friday, but it was moved to later in the month due to some complications.

On Oct. 27, 2020, Keenan Mirasty, now 23, of North Battleford entered his plea to unlawfully causing the death of Sequin Mooswa on March 8, 2020 and thereby commit manslaughter. A charge of second-degree murder in the case was stayed once Mirasty pleaded guilty to the lesser charge.

Defence lawyer Michael Nolin, who appeared by telephone in court on April 8, said there was a case of COVID-19 in his office so he requested more time before the sentencing.

In the public gallery of the courtroom a relative of Mooswa began sobbing after hearing the sentencing would not proceed as expected.

Mirasty’s sentencing was also previously deferred for a second sentencing hearing that was held in March.

Judge Daniel O’Hanlon decided to move the new sentencing date to April 29 at 1:30 p.m., in response to Nolin’s request.

“It is a situation where we are in uncertain times,” the judge said. “But there are individuals in the court who I could say are not happy it is going to be adjourned. But it is a circumstance where it has to be adjourned.”

RCMP previously reported Sequin Mooswa, 22, was found deceased in her home on St. Laurent Drive in North Battleford on March 8, 2020 when police responded to a wellbeing check.
