RCMP Report Pt. 1: One teen hospitalized, another arrested following assault

Apr 7, 2022 | 2:56 PM

A 16-year-old youth from North Battleford faces multiple assault charges after an incident on Tuesday evening left another teen seriously injured.

Police responded to a disturbance shortly after 9:00 p.m. that evening on the 1200 block of 108th St. When officers arrived at the scene, where 10-15 people were reportedly involved, they found a 17-year-old youth unconscious outside the residence, with serious head and facial injuries, and a second male with an edged weapon injury to his arm, which was treated. Sgt. Neil Tremblay said the 17-year-old was transported to Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon but is expected to make a full recovery.

“I believe he was expected to be released from the hospital [very soon],” he said.

Three people, an adult woman, an adult man and one youth, were all arrested on the scene that evening. Tremblay said the accused youth remains in custody and appeared in court Thursday, but no other decisions have been made on anyone else being charged, with further investigation required.

“The two adults have been released without charges at this time, pending further investigation,” he said. “There was quite a number of people there, which is a lot of people to track down.”

Further updates are expected as the investigation continues.

Warrant, welfare check

Battlefords RCMP has issued a warrant for the arrest of 29-year-old Preston Wuttunee, following an incident on March 29. Police were called to a residence on the 1200 block of 96th St., where the accused allegedly assaulted a woman at the residence before leaving in a vehicle. The victim was treated for minor injuries after being punched by the accused during a brief altercation.

Officers were called to complete a welfare check on March 30 with another assault victim. They located a 42-year-old male on the 2000 block of 99th St. and found him suffering from significant bruising up and down his torso sustained in an assault that had occurred the previous weekend.

Tremblay said the victim had been lying in bed for a couple of days when the members showed up.

“He didn’t have ready access to a phone, so he wasn’t able to call for help before they arrived.”

The man was transported to hospital and treated for serious, but non-life-threatening injuries. This remains under investigation.

Multiple arrests

In one incident on March 27, police detained the driver of a blue Subaru for a roadside screening on Railway Avenue, after the vehicle reportedly left the scene of a disturbance on 107th St. The driver had refused to provide a breath sample and a passenger from the vehicle became upset and told the members he would not allow the driver to be arrested, before pushing one of them and getting arrested himself.

“By the time he became a difficulty, there were multiple members on scene, so it wasn’t as dire is it might have been if the member was alone,” Tremblay said.

The 23-year-old driver, who was released from custody, is charged with operation of a vehicle while impaired and refusing the breath sample, with a court date set for May 30. Bernight McDonald, the 32-year-old passenger, was remanded into custody on charges of assaulting a police officer, obstruction and failing to comply with a release order. He appeared in court on March 28.
