City to have special council meeting on masking mandate

Feb 15, 2022 | 8:00 AM

Coun. Bill Ironstand requested a special meeting of North Battleford city council next week to discuss the city’s masking policy.

The online meeting will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 22, before the planning committee meeting.

Ironstand asked for the meeting to consider a proposal to extend the city’s masking mandate.

While the province’s public health order for an indoor masking mandate is expected to end on Feb. 28, Ironstand is recommending the city keep its masking mandate for city-owned facilities in place until the end of March.

City council will have an opportunity to look at the proposal when they convene.

Council approved a resolution Monday to formally remove the city’s COVID-19 Enhanced Measures, requiring proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test result to enter certain city-owned facilities, which aligns with the province’s decision to lift these restrictions effective Feb. 14. The majority of council voted in favour of the proposal, with councillors Ironstand and Kent Lindgren opposed.

City Manager Randy Patrick said other cities also removed their enhanced restrictions where they were in effect.

He noted the city’s enhanced restrictions were originally put in place in response to a provincial health order, giving municipalities the authority to implement vaccination requirements. But Patrick said that authority has now been withdrawn, so the city needed to follow suit and remove its restrictions also.
