RCMP Report Pt. 2: Man charged in multiple investigations

Jan 21, 2022 | 8:00 AM

Battlefords RCMP arrested a 22-year-old man in relation to a hit and run, but charged him with numerous additional charges in connection to break and enter incidents.

Steven Parkhurst of North Battleford was originally arrested after police attempted a traffic stop in a parking lot on the north side of the city just before midnight on Jan. 16. He was located in the suspect vehicle of a hit and run reported from 101st St. earlier in the evening, where there were minor injuries to one of the victims. Sgt. Neil Tremblay said members found him sleeping in the parking lot.

“They had him boxed in, woke him up to perform the arrest and he ended up ramming a police vehicle with one of the officers in it,” Tremblay said.

While the accused was able to evade law enforcement for a time, he was later located and arrested. The officer in the rammed car, which took some damage, was unharmed.

The subsequent investigation has linked the accused to an attempted break and enter to businesses on the 1900 block of 101st St. and on the 1700 block of 110th St. earlier that same evening. He is also facing charges in connection to a vehicle theft from the early morning hours of Dec. 31 and another attempted vehicle theft on Jan. 1.

“He’s still under investigation, which means there may be more charges down the road,” Tremblay said.

Parkhurst was remanded into custody and made his first appearance in court on Tuesday. His charges include:

  • Break and enter with intent
  • Mischief under $5,000 (six counts)
  • Theft under $5,000
  • Possession of break-in instruments (two counts)
  • Flight from police
  • Possession of stolen property over $5,000 (two counts)
  • Assault on a police officer with a weapon
  • Resisting arrest
  • Impaired operation of a motor vehicle
  • Dangerous driving
  • Failing to remain at an accident causing bodily harm.

Several break-ins again

Police investigated 11 reported break and enters in the past few days, including involving three suspects believed to be operating a white Chevy 4×4 truck. This occurred Jan. 15 on Moosomin First Nation and is still under investigation.

Two other break and enter cases occurred without anything being stolen. One happened at a business on the 1700 block of 100th St. in North Battleford, shortly before 9:00 a.m. on Jan. 15, the other at a garage on the 1200 block of 108th St. on Jan. 13.

Vehicle thefts and arrests

There were 14 calls regarding stolen vehicles in the area, two of which resulted in arrests.

On Jan. 14, 22-year-old Jonathan Gunville was arrested and charged with theft of a motor vehicle after a van was stolen from a business in Battleford. The vehicle was later recovered in Lloydminster, where the accused was arrested and remanded into custody.

Additionally, a 15-year-old youth is facing several charges after he was arrested on Jan. 13 after attempting to flee from police on foot after abandoning a vehicle reported stolen. This includes theft of a truck, resisting arrest and failing to comply with his release conditions. The youth was held in custody and appeared in court the next day.

Three vehicles still missing are:

  • A black 1996 Dodge Ram 1500 Club Cab with no license plate, stolen from the 900 block of 108th Street on Jan. 12.
  • A white 1996 GMC Sierra (Alberta License BZZ-9842) reported stolen from Leon Street in Cochin some time on Jan. 14.
  • A white 1994 Chevrolet KV 2500 (Sask License 927-JJR) reported stolen from the 1500 block of 110th St. between Jan. 14-15.

Other calls from the 479 cases include 29 Mental Health investigations, 15 missing persons (none active), 26 Traffic Collisions, 23 Various Traffic Charges and one charge for impaired driving. Anyone with information on any incident can contact the Battlefords RCMP or Crime Stoppers.
