Year in Review: Highlights in local sports (Pt. 1)

During the Christmas season, our team at Pattison Media is once again producing positive stories based around holiday traditions and accomplishments for the region.

Marking an exciting return and rejuvenation of many sports programs, coming off of the COVID shutdown, battlefordsNOW counts down some of the top stories from the past year, in the world of local sports.

#10 — Team Silvernagle punch ticket to Sask Scotties

On the curling rink, local Robyn Silvernagle and her team based out of North Battleford’s Twin Rivers Curling Club earned their spot at the Saskatchewan Scotties earlier this month.

Coming off a cancelled 2020 season, and featuring a pair of new faces at the second and lead positions, Silvernagle said the team is looking forward to the opportunity ahead. Read more here.

#9 — Local coaches recognized for positive impact

Head coach of the U15 AA NorthWest Stars, Boyd Wakelin was named Coach of the Year by the Rivers West District Volunteer Recognition Program in April this year.

Wakelin was recognized for his work behind the bench coaching the U15 AA NorthWest Stars. Read more here.

Dean Dimmick was also highlighted for his work within minor baseball in the community, as he was named Baseball Sask’s 2021 Builder of the Year for his efforts with the 18U Battlefords Beavers baseball team. Read more here.

#8 — Red-letter year for Hafford football

This past year was a year to remember for Hafford Vikings football.

In April, the team took home the Riders’ $5,000 Community Support Initiative prize before also laying claim to their third-straight provincial championship as an organization in the fall. Read more about what the team’s leadership core had to say about the victory, here.

In addition, Vikings’ wide receiver Carson Derksen and quarterback Ty Dubyk also announced their commitment to the Regina Thunder this year, one of the top programs in the province. Read more here.

#7 — Sask Baseball Hall of Fame celebrates ‘home run evening’ at 36th annual induction ceremony

Following a postponed celebration in 2020, the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame was able to return to celebration to host their 36th Annual Induction Ceremony in late August this year.

The event, which featured the enshrinement of 12 individuals, three teams and one community, was well attended with just under 300 people from across the province. Read more here.

#6 — Seven from NBCHS named to Team Saskatoon for Prairie Bowl Series

Seven players from North Battleford Comprehensive High School (NBCHS) were selected to represent Saskatoon Minor Football (SMF) for the 2021 Prairie Bowl Series against Regina Minor Football (RMF).

Linebacker Logan Stolz and receiver Jackson Geddes represented the U18 Varsity team, while defensive back Dylan Geddes, linebacker Carter Thiell, defensive lineman Daltan Gerstenhofer, linebacker Oskar Humenny, and quarterback Isaac Neufeld were tapped to suit up for the U16 squad. Read more here.
