Snowfall hits the Battlefords, Meadow Lake

Winter has officially arrived in Northwest Saskatchewan.

Several communities were issued snowfall warnings by Environment Canada on Wednesday morning, including Meadow Lake. Temperatures there have already dropped below 0 Celsius and should stay that way until Saturday.

Meteorologist Terri Lang said the city can expect that to continue and not expect melting to occur with temperatures below freezing.

“There’s a heavy snowfall warning,” she said. “We’re expecting at least 10-15 centimetres if not more before all is said and done.”

The Battlefords is also seeing snow, though Lang said residents shouldn’t expect more than five centimetres. After a high of 1 C on Wednesday, the next two days are predicted to drop to -2 C and -3 C.

Flurries and light wind should continue through Remembrance Day and as temperatures remain near 0 C, Lang doesn’t expect the same level of snow sticking around.

“With the temperatures the way they are there could be some melting before things pile up,”

Visibility is low in both areas, but particularly in Meadow Lake, which is experiencing the heaviest part of the current system making its way through the region. Because warmer temperatures are likely coming through over the weekend and early next week, Lang said that will further keep from too much snow build-up in the Battlefords area.

“It doesn’t look like we’re getting into a big cold snap, which is why it’s not really a true Alberta clipper, we usually get a big gush of cold air behind it.”

Where conditions are more pressing however, is in the state of highways. Given how warm the past summer and fall have been, Lang said having temperatures close to 0 C could result in some frozen streets and warrants checking highway hotlines.

“There will be some challenging conditions and people should take precautions,” she said.

Among previous advice given by Lang and others on battlefordsNOW includes organizing winter attire, having emergency kits ready and checking the furnace of residences.
