RCMP Report Part 1: Break-ins continue

Sep 29, 2021 | 5:37 PM

The rash of business break-ins continued in North Battleford this month.

Battlefords RCMP reported 14 break and enter investigations during the past 14 days, several of which occurred over the span of 48 hours.

Break-in’s occurred to businesses in North Battleford on the 1200 block of 100th Street and the 900 block of 103rd Street on Sept. 23, as well as the 1200 block of 101st Street on Sept. 24. There was either damage to property or items missing reported in each case, including several hundred dollars in merchandise in the latter case. Attempted break and enter’s occurred to a business on Railway Avenue and 1100 block of 101st Street on Sept. 24.

Sgt. Neil Tremblay said they believe these robberies and attempted robberies are connected.

“We believe they are also connected to several incidents from over the summer as well,” he said. “There’s a good chance at least some of them will be linked to the same person or people. In many of these, the suspect is in and out in less than a minute.”

The investigation is still in its infancy and Tremblay said the detachment is keeping the possibility of multiple suspects open, while leaning towards the likelihood of one suspect. He also commended business owners for doing what they can to keep their premises safe.

“They have alarms, surveillance, etc,” he said. “They’re doing their best, staying as vigilant as possible, but they can’t be everywhere all the time.”

Several assault investigations

Among the 50 assault investigations from the past service period are several still under investigation.

These include a man shot in the leg on Sept. 20 on Mosquito First Nation, a man found injured in a backyard in North Battleford on Sept. 15 and a gunshot victim at the hospital who was hit in the abdomen on Sept. 19 who refused to cooperate with police.

Most recently, a witness reported to police early Sunday afternoon that a male suspect was assaulting a female in a vehicle in the Frontier Mall Parking Lot. The vehicle was described as a red Chevrolet Impala, which then left westbound. The female victim was situated in the driver’s side during the alleged assault.

Tremblay said they have not yet identified either the woman or the male suspect and are asking anyone with information on this matter to contact the detachment.

“We’re trying to identify them as quickly as possible for both her safety and to proceed with the investigation,” he said.

There were also three arrests made during this period relating to assaults.

Nigel Mooswa, 26, was in court on Sept. 20 for charges of assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and carrying a concealed weapon. Thirty-five year-old Austin Paskemin was in court Sept. 17 for robbery with a weapon, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and carrying a concealed weapon.

Early Monday morning in North Battleford, officers arrested 23 year-old Keane Thomas after he reportedly assaulted two people with pepper spray. He faces charges of assaulting a police officer, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose carrying a concealed weapon and failing to comply with a release order.

Anyone with information on any incident can call the Battlefords RCMP detachment or Crime Stoppers.
