18U Beavers take provincial gold in Saskatoon

Aug 16, 2021 | 12:41 PM

It was a weekend to remember for the Battlefords Beavers 18U baseball team, as the club took home a provincial gold medal in Saskatoon.

The Beavers won all five games they played en route to being crowned 2021 AA Tier 2 Provincial champions. Posting a perfect 5-0 record, the local team outscored their opposition by a combined 70-23 score over the course of the tournament.

Head coach, Dean Dimmick said he and the coaches could not be more proud of the team for their play over the weekend and drive on the way to the gold.

“It may sound cliché, but everything came together at the right time of the year,” Dimmick said. “We had great pitching, phenomenal hitting and really strong defence. Pitching-wise our guys put us in great position, hitting we batted as a team about .482, with an on-base percentage close to .600, and then on defence we made the big plays when we needed to.”

The Beavers opened action Friday with a 15-7 win over the Saskatoon BJ Bandits before also topping the Saskatoon Armada A’s 17-4 early in the day Saturday.

A convincing 11-4 victory over the Regina Pacers marked the Beavers’ final win of the round robin, giving them a flawless 3-0 record heading into the playoff rounds.

In the semifinals versus the Saskatoon Blue Jay Blitz, the Beavers continued to roll, on their way to a 12-2 victory, to earn their shot in the gold medal game versus the Lloydminster Twins.

Trailing the Twins 6-5 in the championship contest heading into the seventh inning, the Beavers would knot the score 6-6, before ultimately pulling away in extra-innings with nine-straight runs to take the contest 15-6, and the gold medal with it.

“That last game especially was a real back-and-forth game,” Dimmick said. “We were down a run most of the game, but we were able to knot it up and go to extras, and our guys just wanted it. They erupted for nine runs [to get the win], but the score wasn’t indicative of how close it was. It truly was a team effort, and we’re really proud of this group.”
