Chamber Business Golf Challenge to take place Friday

Jun 17, 2021 | 1:00 PM

A number of local businesses from the community will be making their way to Jackfish Lodge Golf and Conference Centre Friday, for the Battlefords Chamber of Commerce annual Chamber Business Golf Challenge.

Chief operating officer with the chamber, Linda Machniak said just a day away from the event, they are looking forward to the festivities with another great turnout expected this year.

“We’re at least on par with previous years, if not a bit higher, so I’m very happy about that,” she said. “We have great sponsorship and engagement from not only the golfers but the business community to participate as well, so we’re really excited about that.”

At this point, 116 golfers divided between 29 teams have confirmed their spot in the day’s event. Though 144 would be maximum capacity with current provincial restrictions in place, Machniak said their current number—with the potential to still add one or two more throughout the day Thursday—should work well.

“I’m okay with that number, because it means there’s only one team on each of the par 3s, and we’re still trying to keep it as spaced out as we can, just to be sure we have those distancing protocols in place, so we’ll certainly meet those requirements to have some distance included.”

While many of the traditional aspects of the Chamber Golf Challenge will remain, there will also be a new addition to the tournament this year, known as ‘The Fastest Hole in Golf.’

Taking place on hole 18, which is a par 5, the mini-game will serve as a type of relay. One person will start the drive from the tee-box, while the second will be part-way down the hole to take the next shot. The third and fourth members of the team, stationed up towards the green, will then follow hitting the third and fourth shots, to try to drain the ball as quickly and efficiently as possible as a unit.

If by chance the ball does not go in the hole after four shots, the first golfer will then follow-up with the fifth shot, and the order will continue until the ball is sunk. The event will be timed, and the team with the fastest hole of the day will be awarded a prize and some ribbons as champions of the fastest hole in golf.

Machniak said the chamber is looking forward to the week’s event, and appreciate all the support from local businesses, both in taking part, and sponsorships that help make the day what it is.

“We’re really pleased with all the support we’ve received from the local business community, and we’re looking forward to some great weather and lots of fun out at the lake tomorrow,” she said.

Both breakfast and lunch will be provided Friday, however due to COVID regulations it will not be served in a banquet as usual. Instead, the meals will be available for teams to pick up at the clubhouse throughout the day, on their way through hole 9 or 18.

Registration times for Friday’s event have been staggered in 15 minute intervals starting at 9:30 a.m., with Shot Gun start to follow at 10:30 a.m. For more information on the day’s event, call the Chamber office at (306) 445-6226, or visit their newly revamped website.
