Town upgrading water treatment plant technology

The Town of Battleford is upgrading its water treatment plant with the latest computer operating system.

The issue was discussed at this week’s council meeting. The upgrade will keep the facility’s Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system up to date.

“It’s to keep the system current with the newest technology,” Utility Department Manager Aubrey Whittleton said. “Our current system is getting to be obsolete. The replacement parts are very hard to find and are resulting in costly or unavailable repairs. The system is essential to operate the water plant efficiently.”

Council approved administration’s recommendation for the town to allow the system upgrade for the sum of $167,700 plus taxes.

The town is able to defer some previously funded capital projects to cover the cost of this project so the budget will still be balanced.

The upgrade will also create some uniformity with the town’s lagoon wastewater treatment system.

“Our new lagoon system will have the newest update of the SCADA system which we currently do not have,” Whittleton said. “That’s what this upgrade will do. Both of the systems will be updated to the newest technology.”

CAO Ash Alam said in his report the improvement is much needed.

“The Water Treatment Plant [WTP] is a valuable asset,” he said. “[We are] recommending that council may approve this funding to protect the asset. No chances should be taken with the operations of the WTP for liability purposes.”
