North Battleford community programmer and Don Ross Centre manager Siobhan Gormley has been honoured with the Saskatchewan Association of Recreation Professionals (SARP) 2020 Award of Merit for her many contributions in the field.

Gormley is humbled to have received the award.

“It’s very nice to be recognized from my peers across the province,” she said. “It was an honour that I was very surprised to receive.”

Gormley said she was always involved with recreation and sport growing up, and continued that through her service and volunteer efforts.

“It’s nice to give back,” she said. “Somebody was always there to provide things for me so it’s nice to return that favour in the community.”

The city’s parks and recreation director Cheryl DeNeire made the announcement at this week’s council meeting.

The award is given to an individual who has been in the recreation field for a minimum of five years in Saskatchewan; who has been recognized for their entire body of work; made a contribution of extraordinary nature at the municipal, regional, provincial or national level for a number of years; and who has made contributions that have left a lasting impact for future professionals.

Gormley has worked and volunteered in sports, culture and recreation for many years.

DeNeire said Gormley has been a ski instructor in three provinces. She has been responsible for fitness programming at the Moose Jaw YWCA, and has spent the last 11 years with the City of North Battleford in various fitness and recreation positions.

Gormley has a long history with the Saskatchewan Games program, being a ski athlete in the 1974 and 1978 Winter Games, as well as being involved in the bid to bring the 2018 Saskatchewan Winter Games to the Battlefords.

“Not only did she have a role through her work, but she also put in additional hours as a volunteer and was a Torch Bearer,” DeNeire said. “I would like to extend my congratulations to Siobhan for being the 2020 Award of Merit recipient.”

Mayor David Gillan also commended Gormley for her long service and volunteer achievements.

“On behalf of council, we extend the same congratulations to Siobhan,” he said. “Excellent news. We’re very proud of her and all of the work that she does for the City of North Battleford.”
