Town establishes new advertising and sponsorship policy for its parks, facilities

Mar 2, 2021 | 4:01 PM

The Town of Battleford will be accepting requests from any organizations interested in purchasing naming rights or advertising space for a number of its facilities and venues.

Council agreed in principal to a draft proposal from administration at this week’s meeting to establish an advertising and sponsorship policy and package.

Mayor Ames Leslie said the program will help bring more revenue to the town.

“Anytime we can offset tax dollars is always a good thing,” he said.

If someone is willing to supplement income for the town by putting their name on a building, he said, similar to Access Communications acquiring naming rights for the Civic Centre in North Battleford, for example, it will help bring more funding to the community.

Leslie added the extra revenue will also hopefully reduce some of the town’s expenses to run those facilities.

Jordan Schechtel, manager of the town’s parks and recreation department, indicated in his report that currently the only asset the town receives advertising and sponsorship revenue from is the Battleford Arena, which brings in up to $9,000 annually.

The parks and recreation committee will review the sponsorship package every two years to ensure rates are appropriate.

The policy applies to many town-owned facilities, parks, structures, equipment and programs. It does not apply to gifts, memorials, donations, grants or special events.

The policy establishes advertising and sponsorship agreement terms up to five years and naming rights for up to 10 years, unless otherwise authorized by council.

Leslie mentioned council also has the opportunity to consider amending the policy if it wants to do so at a future meeting.
