Old town landfill closure process on track

Battleford’s old landfill remains on track in the decommission process.

Results from a slope stability analysis that was carried out on the old land, was presented to council Monday evening. The report details while there’s some change in the soil over the past year, there’s no major work to be done till at least the spring. The town has monitored the land closely and hope to complete the project soon, after many years of slow adjustment since the town closed the landfill more than 17 years ago.

“When we decommissioned the landfill, we put layers of loose ground on top,” CAO Ash Alam said. “It just takes years to settle.”

Engineers have already worked on fixing the well systems that were damaged from various natural causes and continue to monitor water activity and speed. Mayor Ames Leslie said there’s no cause for alarm from the changes in the landfill, as they don’t pose a danger to the area. Rather, it’s something that administration and water works will have to continue to pay attention to in the coming months.

“If we get another big rainfall or big snow event, it could change the stability of that slope,” Leslie said. “But it’s just a reminder to look into it moving forward.”

If there’s further developments in the land from natural causes in the short term, Leslie said the town could invest in measures to correct the process.

“At that point, it might be something we want to invest in now, to be proactive, rather than reactive, to any situation that develops in the future,” he said.

Leslie said they hope the project is finished within the calendar year.

“If nothing major needs to be done, then it will finalize.”

The town’s funding of the landfill closure consulting is covered by a reserve of more than $155,000 set aside for the project. Stage two, which includes the slope stability analysis, has a cost of more than $49,000.
