United Way month launched at city hall in North Battleford

Oct 5, 2020 | 1:50 PM

The City of North Battleford officially proclaimed October as United Way month, with a flag-raising ceremony outside city hall Monday.

Volunteers with the Canadian Mental Health Association will deliver brochures about the United Way’s campaign to area homes in October and November.

The Battlefords United Way’s campaign event director Sharon Mohagen said the organization provided assistance to over a dozen charities this year dealing with the financial impact from COVID-19.

“We are asking that the community give generously and to provide support, so we can continue to build a strong and healthy community,” she said.

Mohagen invites people to take part in the annual Coffee on the Run fundraiser on Oct. 21, sponsored by Tim Hortons.

Businesses and individuals can order a coffee and a muffin for $5 by contacting the local United Way and completing their form by Oct. 19. Volunteers will then deliver the items Oct. 21.

The Battlefords United Way provides core funding to six agencies.

In total it offered support to over a dozen charities and groups impacted by the pandemic this year.

Mohagen said the Battlefords United Way invested over $400,000 into the community since the start of 2020.

“We still need help with the pandemic,” Mohagen said.

She said there are many agencies that are struggling with their programs as well.

North Battleford Mayor Ryan Bater commended the United Way for its work in the area.

“The United Way is a very important agency in our community,” he said. “They provide support to a number of other agencies and community initiatives. We’re really grateful for the volunteers, contributors and supporters of the United Way who make all that possible.”
