Lazar announces candidacy for North Battleford city council

For nine years, local, Clay Lazar served as a paramedic and firefighter in the city of North Battleford.

It is experience that has provided him with a unique perspective of the community, and ultimately, a path that has helped lead him where he is today: running for a position on North Battleford City Council.

The North Battleford community has always been a big part of life for Lazar.

Growing up in nearby Saskatoon, he would often visit family in the area and spent much time over his formative years in the community, prior to moving here to set down some roots of his own, in 2010.

Lazar said he decided to run for council in hopes of helping to give a voice to those who may not otherwise be heard.

“We as a community, I believe, have an obligation [and] duty to take care of the people who are unable to take care of themselves,” he said. “It is time, we as a community, acknowledge and accept we have issues when it comes to poverty, homelessness, substance abuse, crime and gangs; subjects we have allowed to go on for way too long.”

Lazar said should he be elected, his goal is to help address those key issues. Not just through the use of legislation, but through the strength of the community banding together as well. He said he wants to help promote a positive sense of community pride and initiative within residents, to do what they can to help make a difference.

“We’ve put a lot of emphasis on our city council, our administration, and also the RCMP, to fix up our issues without a lot of community involvement,” he said. “This is our home, and we need to be active participants in making it a better place.”

Lazar added while he does hope to help make a change in the community, he is also someone who will appreciate differing perspectives on issues, and weigh the pros and cons of a given situation with a level head.

“I just want the voters to know, if they do vote for me, they are going to have someone who does their due diligence before making decisions that affect those in North Battleford,” he said. “They’re going to have someone who’s mindful of everyone before he makes a decision.”
