The Town of Battleford is seeing an increase in impaired driving cases, but a drop in property crime in the latest RCMP report.

The report covered the second quarter from April to June and the year-to-date tally ending June 30.

Battleford experienced a slight overall increase in numbers. The total calls for service went up by two per cent, compared to the same time last year. However, the second quarter period total is just about on par with the same time last year.

Impaired driving reports doubled, with 14 cases to date, compared to seven at the same time last year. From April to June there were 10 reports, a jump from the four reported for the period in 2019.

Battlefords RCMP Insp. Tom Beck stated in his submitted report the RCMP are focused on crime reduction initiatives.

“We continue to analyze and evaluate problem areas and individuals in an effort to target them for crime reduction initiatives via our general duty uniformed personnel and specialty teams,” he said. “All members at the detachment including general duty, plain clothes and specialty teams contribute to this effort.”

The RCMP’s performance plan targets are improving road safety by focusing on distracted driving and impaired driving violations. Officers also aim to prevent and reduce the threat of gangs, guns and gang violence, among their priorities.

The latest crime statistics show criminal code offences saw a 21 per cent increase in the year to date tally.

The report also reflects some improvements in several categories.

There were no business break and enters so far this year or in the second quarter period.

Residential break and enters were up by 12 per cent for the year to date, with nine reports for the current period, compared to eight last year. However, for the second quarter there was only one report, a drop from four for the same time in 2019.

Property offences were down by close to 20 per cent, with 119 reports for the year to date compared to 145 last year. April to June saw 64 reports, also down from the 90 reports for the same time in 2019.

Crimes against persons decreased by 10 per cent for the year to date. However, the second quarter saw a slight increase, with 38 reports for the period, up by five from the same time in 2019.
