North Battleford local, Shae Maunula is quickly establishing himself as a force on the 10-and-under youth golf circuit.

Shae took home the Boys 9-10 Division title this week, shooting 72 at the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour held in Regina.

The tournament marked just the second of the season for Maunula, who has been golfing since age two, but just began his trek on the tournament circuit last season.

The first place finish follows a runner-up performance in his opening tournament of the season, earlier this summer in Swift Current.

“I felt awesome,” Shae said reflecting on his win. “It was a really happy feeling, because I had just won a tournament and I had never won one before.”

Due to COVID-19 restrictions there were no spectators, so Shae’s cheering section had to celebrate the victory after the fact. However, he was able to share the moment of victory with his father, Scott, who served as caddy for his son throughout the tournament.

“He played really well and he stayed focused,” Scott Maunula said. “He hit the ball really well that day and his putting was bang-on. He pretty much two-putted most greens and didn’t leave much else out there.”

Shae will now look to keep his momentum rolling moving forward this summer. He already has his sights set on tournaments in Olds, Alta., and Warman.

“My favorite thing about golf is just, when I have a great hole, it makes me happy,” Shae said. “When I have a good hole it lets me just carry on hoping the rest of the round is that good too.”
