City realigning walking path at 15th Avenue for ease and safety

Jun 25, 2020 | 2:11 PM

Those using the city’s walking path will see some changes at 15th Avenue in the near future.

The city is altering the path on the west side of Territorial Drive at this location since a lighted intersection will be installed in the future.

Currently the path comes across 15th Avenue from behind where the actual intersection would be located.

“This path is aligning just to cross 15th Avenue but we want it to cross where the crosswalk will actually be,” Mayor Ryan Bater said. “Right now the path meets 15th Avenue 10-metres west of that.”

Realigning the route will also improve safety for those using the pathway system.

“If we are going to have a walking path or bicycle path going across 15th Avenue it is just safer to have it actually cross where a crosswalk will be, as opposed to 10 metres west of it,” Bater said.

According to city administration, consulting company Urban Systems, working for the developer Red Pheasant First Nation, is creating a lighted intersection at Territorial Drive and 15th Avenue. The firm proposed a plan to include the path realignment as part of the overall project, with the city being responsible for the additional cost of about $32,300.

City engineer Bob Anthony said there would be some cost savings for the city by having the path work completed at the same time as the lighted intersection is being installed in the area.

Council approved a resolution for the proposal to realign the path, with the cost coming from reserves, to be repaid with interest in the city’s 2021 budget.
