Town online meeting proceeds despite live stream glitch

The Town of Battleford encountered a glitch on its live stream link that prevented the public from viewing the online council meeting Monday. Otherwise the meeting proceeded as planned. This was the first time council held an online meeting.

battlefordsNOW attempted to access the live stream event via the town’s link Monday several times during the evening without success and notified the town of the issue. The town was able to provide a video of the meeting Wednesday.

The town needed to go online for its council meetings for the immediate future to comply with the province’s COVID-19 precaution orders that ban gatherings of more than 10 people and require individuals to maintain a social distance of at least two metres from one another.

Mayor Ames Leslie gave a nod to the unusual format at the beginning of the event initially introducing it as an “irregular” council meeting.

Leslie was joined by Councillors Doug Laing and Gordon Yarde, finance director David Gillan and executive assistant Noreen Hoffart in council chambers, while other councillors and other town employees logged into the meeting online via video connections. CAO John Enns-Wind also participated online.

There were no public hearings or delegations during the meeting.

Some of the items discussed at the meeting include the North Saskatchewan River north and south truss bridges that connect to Finlayson Island. The town was following up on the possibility of having a drone service used for an additional inspection of these old bridges to assess the repairs needed.

Other issues discussed include dealing with effluent from the Thunderchild-Decibel Cannabis Company’s new facility located on the outskirts of Battleford; the Whistle Blower bylaw appointment; looking at reallocating funds from capital projects; the Fred Light Museum banner program; the pandemic plan update; and the Saskatchewan Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum’s summer student funding.
