Urbanski nabs hat trick, as Stars wrangle Mustangs 6-2

In their first game action after nearly a full week off, the Battlefords North Stars cashed in a perfect 4-for-4 billing on the power play, as the team lapped the Melfort Mustangs Friday night, 6-2 at the Civic Centre.

Stars’ forward, Mathias Urbanski led the way for the Battlefords with a hat trick performance, while Noah Form, Quintin Loon-Stewardson, and Kaden Boser also chipped in with goals on the night.

In net, Kristian Lyon made 21 saves on 23 shots in the victory for the Stars.

Kyle Bosch and Zach Anderson scored for Melfort in the loss, while netminder, Shawn Parkinson stopped 21-of-27.

After a scoreless first period, Bosch opened things up for the visitors, just 1:30 into play in the second. Cashing in on a nice three-on-one passing play, Bosch’s tally served as the ninth of the season for the former Kindersley Klipper, and made the score 1-0 Mustangs.

Before the end of the second, Urbanski’s first of the night tied things 1-1 on the power play.

Coming on the Stars’ initial man advantage of the night, Urbanski’s 18th came after the forward lifted home a one-touch pass from Austin Becker in the corner, under the crossbar and in from in-tight.

Heading into the third period in a tie contest, Melfort cashed early in the third as well, as Zach Anderson snapped home his 11th to make it a 2-1 Melfort advantage.

However, the lead would not last long before a title wave of North Stars’ goals came flooding back in response. The Stars’ push was kicked off swiftly, with two strikes in 20 seconds to capitalize back-to-back on a 5-on-3.

Noah Form retied the game on a power play point shot during the two-man advantage just over a minute after Melfort had pulled ahead. Sizzling home the 2-2 marker, Form’s goal served as the defenceman’s eighth of the year.

Urbanski then also added his second of the game, again on the power play, to make it 3-1 on the subsequent 5-on-4.

Quintin Loon-Stewardson’s team leading, 26th of the year gave the Stars a critical insurance marker at 4-2, before Urbanski’s hat trick completing tuck home, broke the game wide open at 5-2.

With just under three minutes to go in regulation, Boser’s eighth also came on the power play, making it 6-2, and serving as the icing on top of the Stars’ victory cake.

With the victory, the North Stars have now won five straight. The team will look to keep their momentum rolling Saturday, as they will search for their sixth consecutive, against the Melville Millionaires at the Civic Centre.

Saturday’s game will be broadcast on 1050 CJNB. The NAPA Auto Parts North Stars Hockey Broadcast will begin with pregame at 7:15 p.m. and puck drop to follow at 7:30 p.m.
