Working outside in the cold ‘just another day’ for local gas station attendants

For some locals, the cold temperatures are a part of their day-to-day lives as they work outdoors. Gas attendants are one of those positions where it is impossible to avoid the frigidly cold Saskatchewan air.

These people are the ones you want to go to for tips for staying warm when faced with Tuesday’s -35 Celsius weather.

Jeff Kitzan from the Discovery Co-op in Battleford says he and his co-workers try to dress in layers to stay warm and always have quality boots, gloves and head gear to help stave off the cold.

Kitzan also said they try to rotate people from inside and outside so that one person is not stuck in the frigid temperatures all day long.

“Taking breaks helps. We are switching out as well,” he said.

Another tip offered by Kitzan was to try and stay active while you are outside to keep the blood flow moving.

“Keeping moving rather than just standing in one spot [will help]. Just to keep everything moving and staying warm,” he said.

For some people, the mental fortitude required to get out of bed in the morning knowing they have to work outside in freezing temperatures would be a stretch, but Kitzan said for gas attendants it is “just another day in the life.”
