Battlefords Chamber of Commerce announces results of its directors election

Jan 10, 2020 | 4:53 PM

The Battlefords Chamber of Commerce has announced the results of its Board of Directors election for the 2020-2021 term.

The following seven directors have been elected for a two-year term: Gordon Brewerton (Battlefords Publishing), Cassandra Germsheid (Kerr’s Cleaner’s), Misty Lavertu (Downtown North Battleford BID), and incumbents Tisha Carriere (Gold Eagle Lodge), Susan Challis (SaskTel), Dana Rissling (Innovation Credit Union) and Vivian Whitecalf (Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs).

Chief Operating Officer Linda Machniak said she appreciated seeing all the candidates running in the directors election.

“We’re really pleased that members step up and allow their name to stand,” Machniak said. “It’s important that we have a really strong board to be the voice of business for the Battlefords’ businesses. We have been really fortunate over many years that the business people have always been willing to put their names forward and participate.”

The newly elected directors will be introduced at the Chamber’s Annual General Meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 4. They will join other directors who still have another year to serve.

The Chamber’s newly elected executive will be sworn in at the 114th Annual Chair’s Banquet to be held at the Dekker Centre on Jan. 23.

During the event it is anticipated incoming chair, Harris Sutherland, will be inducted. The guest speaker for the evening will be Zane Hansen, President and CEO of Saskatchewan Indian Gaming Authority (SIGA). The event begins at 6 p.m.

Machniak said it will be exciting for the Chamber to welcome Sutherland as the new chair of the board of directors for the year ahead, which she believes would make him the first Indigenous chair for the Battlefords Chamber of Commerce.

She said there has been a Métis participant in the past, but she is not aware of another First Nations person who has carried on this role for the Chamber before. Machniak said the Chamber is “really pleased that Harris has stepped up” for the position. Sutherland currently serves as the Chamber’s vice chair.
