Accused in Thunderchild First Nation murder case still to obtain legal counsel

The case involving a man facing a charge in the death of Roger Standingwater on Thunderchild First Nation last year has been adjourned again as the accused still needs to obtain legal counsel.

Ivor Antoine Wapass, 44, who is in custody, is charged with second-degree murder in the death of Standingwater, 57, on Sept. 15, 2018. Wapass was arrested Nov. 1, 2019.

He appeared in person again in North Battleford Provincial Court on Monday.

Wapass plans to speak with a Legal Aid lawyer who will need to obtain disclosure from the Crown.

The accused must abide by a no contact order for a list of seven individuals whose names are under a publication ban.

According to the RCMP, the investigation began when officers responded to an unresponsive male at a home on the First Nation on Sept. 15, 2018. They arrived and found Standingwater in medical distress. When paramedics arrived, he was pronounced deceased.

To assist with the Turtleford RCMP investigation, officers from the North Battleford RCMP’s general investigation and identification sections responded, along with the Northern RCMP Major Crimes Unit.

Wapass is scheduled to return to court via CCTV at 11 a.m. on Nov. 25.
