Stars blank Mustangs 3-0 to win 14th straight

Nov 9, 2019 | 12:37 AM

The Battlefords North Stars stayed scorching hot Friday, as the team shut out the Melfort Mustangs, 3-0 to claim their 14th straight win.

The victory marks the Stars’ second consecutive shutout win, and improves the team’s overall record to 21-1 on the season, and a perfect 2-0 against Melfort this year.

Goaltender Adam Dmyterko led the way for the Stars, stopping all 28 shots he faced on the night, while Dace Prymak potted the eventual game winner and Matthias Urbanski chipped in a pair for the team.

For Dmyterko, the shutout served as the netminder’s second of the season. Perhaps most impressively, the performance came in Dmyterko’s return to the crease after being pulled in his last outing, back on Oct. 29 against Nipawin.

Stars assistant coach, Rob Holoien said the performance just goes to show the character of the 19-year-old.

“[Dmyterko] was awesome tonight,” Holoien said. “He’s been working hard this last week and really putting in the time. He’s been out there an hour before practice working with [the goalie coach] and the hard work is paying off for him which is nice to see.”

With the win Friday, Dmyterko has now picked up 12 wins this season to go along with a 2.28 goals-against average and .930 save percentage, each ranking amongst the league’s elite. (Martin Martinson/battlefordsNOW Staff)

Dace Prymak opened the scoring at the 18:10 mark of the first period to make it 1-0 Stars.

Tipping home a Noah Form point shot from the line, Prymak’s opening tally served as the forward’s fourth of the season.

It was also the only goal of the first two periods for either side.

Heading into the third period, the game remained 1-0 North Stars.

Midway through the third, Matthias Urbanski broke the game open with back-to-back strikes in quick succession.

Notching his ninth of the season at the 6:37 mark of the period, the veteran then also picked up his tenth, just over two minutes later to make it 3-0 seemingly in the blink of an eye.

With two goals on the night, Stars’ forward Matthias Urbanski (#12) has now scored four goals over his last four games, with 10 goals, 21 points on the season. (Martin Martinson/battlefordsNOW Staff)

Despite a flurry of pressure late with the goalie pulled on a power play, Melfort could not turn their six-on-four advantage into a goal on the night.

Shawn Parkinson stopped 23 of 26 shots against in the loss.

The North Stars will now look to ride their momentum from Friday’s win into action Saturday night, as the team will return to the ice for their second game of the weekend against the Nipawin Hawks at Centennial Arena in Nipawin.

Saturday night’s game will be broadcast on 1050 CJNB. The Ultra Print Pregame Show will begin at 7:15 p.m. with puck drop at 7:30 p.m. on NAPA North Stars Hockey.
