Delisle Chiefs sign local blue liner Tuck

With just over a week to go ahead of their pre-season opener, the Delisle Chiefs of the Prairie Junior Hockey League (PJHL) bolstered their blue line Tuesday, as the team announced the signing of 18-year-old defenceman, Tyson Tuck.

A North Battleford product, Tuck has spent the last two seasons with the Battlefords Stars of the Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League (SMHL), picking up a goal and 11 points in 78 games with the team.

Chiefs’ head coach and general manager, Eric Ditto said he’s happy to add the blue liner to the group’s backend, as he provides the team with added grit and sandpaper, as well as bringing potential for added offensive growth.

“I see a really physical game with him,” he said. “I don’t see a whole lot of offensive game with him at this point, but I think that is something we will work with him to develop. Defensively he seems very solid. He skates well, he plays the body really well and I think he is going to be a big role player for our team and help us for sure in the defensive zone.”

Ditto said he had watched Tuck play a few games last winter with the AAA Stars, and after seeing him again at Battlefords’ Spring camp, he knew the defenceman was someone who could be a valuable contributor to the team.

“I really got to like him there, [at spring camp] and I have kind of been in touch with him all summer,” the coach said. “He had a few other options of places to play, and then after he was released at Battlefords North Stars’ main camp, I was in touch with him again and we both thought it was a good fit for him to play on our team.”

Tuck joins a strong Delisle team that set a league record last season going 38-1-1 through the regular season.

After earning first place in the North Division, the team lost in the second round of the post-season, something the club will hope to build on this fall.

The Chiefs will kick off their pre-season against the Carrot River Outback Thunder Sept. 20 at Delisle Arena.

The team will also open their regular season at home against the Thunder on Sept. 28.
