Fin Island Trail Run offers free fun for the family

Runners can expect to see the sun brush through the trees with blue skies overhead at the Fin Island Trail Run Aug. 24.

The Trail Run is an event for all ages and athletic types. Broken up into four separate runs, the kid’s one kilometre run will begin at 8 a.m. with the 5 km, 10 km, and Long Course runs kicking off at 8:30 a.m. each from the start/finish line at Destination Battlefords.

Those taking part in each of the runs are welcome to run together if they so choose. The trail will be the same, just varied in distance. Depending on weather and the condition of the island, the Long Course will likely be between 14 and 16 kilometers.

Organizer of the event, Jes Kohut said the run is a great way to take in the beauty of the area.

“As far as our natural trails go, I think we’re a beautiful city and town,” she said. “[The Trail Run] is a good way to celebrate what we have, and also show off to other communities that what we have is pretty awesome. I think our community is proud of what the Battlefords has to offer.”

Kohut, along with Erin Kobelsky, Lynn Brightwell, Kate Hildebrand, and Sandra Favel Rewerts, make up the organizing committee who first brought the event to the community just over a decade ago, and continue to today. She said to see how the event has grown over the years is something truly special. As the Trail Run heads into its 11th year, the event now averages over 200 people on a yearly basis.

“I think it just goes to show that our community loves to get together and do something fun and healthy,” Kohut said. “No matter where you are at in your life financially, socially, [or] physically, you are able to come out and try this run for free, and have some healthy fun.”

Registration for the Trail Run is free, with participants asked to pick up their race packages at Destination Battlefords Aug. 23 between 12 and 7 p.m.
