Cochin Days promises three days full of family fun

Jul 21, 2019 | 12:34 PM

A weekend at the lake full of family activities is a Saskatchewan rite of passage.

The Resort Village of Cochin will host the 39th rendition of Cochin Days from Aug. 9 to 11. The three day event will be jam packed with family friendly activities for all ages.

Friday kicks off with the start of the Slo-pitch tournament that will run all weekend. Later in the evening a movie in the park is planned, where a big screen is brought out for spectators to enjoy. There will be popcorn and all the regular movie goodies available.

Saturday morning will be the kid’s bike parade at 10:30 a.m.

“We have the fire truck lead the kids down and around the village and last year we had about 140 kids on bikes,” David Stillar said, an organizer for the event.

Saturday is also the start of the volleyball tournament, which runs over two days, with the finals on Sunday.

Apollo Jump from Saskatoon is coming out to set up an assortment of bouncy castles for the kids to enjoy.

“One of them will be a ninja obstacle course, a normal bouncy castle and then a maze type of bouncy castle for the kids to enjoy,” he added.

Other events taking place on Saturday include a horse shoe tournament and a trade show and food fair at the main hall. They will have 35 to 40 vendors in with different kinds of food and arts and crafts available.

There will also be a scavenger hunt that runs through the day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Saskatoon Shrine Club is hosting a show and shine. They invite everyone to drop by and look at all the classic cars they will have shined up and on display.

In the evening there will be a big spaghetti eating contest in the tennis courts underneath the tents.

Saturday will wrap up with a boat parade and fireworks.

“Last year, it was absolutely phenomenal. We’ve had people tell us they are better than what they have seen in larger centers so that is kind of nice to see. We’ve put about $4,000 into the show” said Stillar.

Sunday morning everyone is invited to the pancake and sausage breakfast.

There will be a children’s carnival in the afternoon from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. with a whole bunch of kids games and prizes that have been solicited from a bunch of businesses in the village and North Battleford.

All the stuff for the kids is free all weekend long. Proceeds from the beer gardens and the adult activities go towards that and back into the community.

The goal behind the event is to build a sense of community around the village and to raise money for projects to improve the area. They plan to repair and rebuild the softball diamonds and helping out with the basketball court. Down the line. they are also looking at buying some new playground equipment.

Stillar said the event would not be possible without the community coming together to help pull it all off.

“Last year, we had over 150 volunteers to make everything happen. A large part of the community is helping out with different things at different times, even if it’s just helping out for an hour.”
