North Stars Hockey School offers skills training for youth

Jul 17, 2019 | 2:42 PM

It might be summer, but school is in session for the North Stars Hockey School.

The team’s coach, Brayden Klimosko will be offering tips and skills development for local hockey players from Aug. 19 to 23.

The five-day workshop is open to youth of the novice, atom, peewee, bantam and midget divisions.

Klimosko will be joined by various North Stars who will help run the event. He said many players have reached out to volunteer their time to help coach.

“I hadn’t even really asked any of the players yet, so that goes to show what kind of character guys we have here,” he said.

Klimosko said the goal of the hockey school is to help the youth attending take their game to the next level and improve, while also having fun getting an up-close look at some of their favourite players.

“I think the big thing that we’re hoping for is that the kids get better and that it translates to their minor hockey season,” he said. “I [also] think it’s a great opportunity for kids to get out and meet some of the guys while they learn some skills; it kind of serves as a kick-start to the season.”

The five-day camp will include a variety on both on and off-ice skills, with the off-ice activities including dryland training, and outdoor street hockey among other team building games and exercises.

For the on-ice portion, Klimosko said the camp will have an emphasis on power skating. The skill focuses on developing energy and speed within skating stride and Klimosko ran the power skating program in Humboldt.

The school will conclude with a scrimmage on the final day and group barbecue to follow.

Registration is available until Aug. 9 here.
