North Battleford investing funds for new roof at water treatment plant

The city’s water treatment facility will be getting a new leak-free topper.

North Battleford lawmakers agreed to go full steam ahead and replace the roof for the F.E. Holliday Water Treatment Plant that is in disrepair.

Council approved administration’s recommendation to hire JR & Co. Roofing Contractors for the project at a cost of $197,876.

“The work on the roof is needed,” Mayor Ryan Bater said. “We budgeted $300,000. The bid itself that was successful was slightly under $200,000 plus taxes. We’re looking forward to getting the roof fixed. That plant is very old, and we want to make sure we are maintaining and managing that asset. Part of that is to make sure it is not leaking.”

City administration said the firm submitted the third lowest of 11 bids received and offered the best results to meet the city’s needs.

The company’s proposal also addressed the drainage issue that caused the plant’s roof to leak in the first place, according to the city.

The new roof will be installed using a two-ply material that will be torched or melted together with heat.

Crews will remove the old roofing material to check for damage. They will use what’s known as a rigid R-30 insulation material for the project. They plan to add a shaped layer to the roof to improve drainage.

The city said the type of roofing proposed for the initiative is reliable and has been used for several decades.

The project will take about 30 days to complete and has a 20 year warranty.
