Over 50 young, up-and-coming golfers participated in the annual Saskatchewan Junior Golf Provincials held this week at Nipawin’s Evergreen Golf Course.

Featured among the standouts at the three-day event, was Brooklin Fry of Shell Lake, who made her mark with a podium finish in the women’s championship, and Prince Albert’s T.J. Baker, whose stellar play as the tournament progressed made for an interesting finish in the men’s.

For Fry, who entered the tournament as a favorite after capturing last year’s junior title, the week’s tournament featured another solid showing with stretches of dominance on display.

Now in her fourth year of golfing competitively, the 14-year-old blew out of the gate shooting a three-over-par 75, through her opening round to pick up where she left off last year, and take a three-stroke lead to end the opening day.

After a middle round that saw her post a 14-over-par 86, Fry bounced back in a big way in the third round to deliver an eight-over-par 80. She closed out the tournament with a third-place finish in the Junior Women’s Championship at 25-over-par.

“It was pretty good,” Fry said, reflecting on the tournament. “My first round was really good, probably the best I’ve ever shot in a tournament and then it kind of went a little downhill [but] I brought it back at the end.”

Fry’s third-place finish at the tournament was the best total by a U-15 player, earning her top-spot in the U-15 Bantam age category.

Regina’s Autumn Neiszner won the women’s side, finishing at 14-over-par at the event.

93rd SK Junior Men’s Championship

Prince Albert’s T.J. Baker, who golfs out of Waskesiu, finished seventh on the men’s side.

It was a bit of a tough start to the tournament for Baker, who fell behind the proverbial eight ball with a 12-over-par 84, through the opening round, to finish day one 22nd on the leaderboard.

Things picked up for Baker as the tournament progressed however, as the veteran, who at 16 years old has already been golfing for 12 years, only continued to progress as the tourney continued. Barker closed out round two just seven-over-par 79, and day three one-under-par 71. That put him just a single shot back of the lead for the final round, and earned him a seventh-place finish at the tournament at 18-over-par.

“The course was in great shape, [and] the competition was unbelievably hard,” Baker said, reflecting on the tournament. “I didn’t really feel too good after the first two days, but to come out on the third day and shoot that one-under was pretty good.”

Jace Carlisle took top spot at the men’s championship, finishing the tournament at five-over-par, highlighted by an opening round that saw the Estevan product shoot a tournament-best, three-under-par 69.

North Battleford’s Colby Friedrich placed 12th at 20-over-par. After finishing 19-over par through the first two rounds, Friedrich rebounded nicely, going one-over-par 73, to close out the tournament on the final day.
