Battlefords Trappers playing in their first NSRBL playoffs

The third time is the charm.

The Battlefords Trappers have made it into the North Saskatchewan River Baseball League (NSRBL) playoffs.

This is the third season the Battlefords Trappers have been in the NSRBL and the first time they have managed to crack the postseason.

The Trappers had an impressive regular season, finishing the season with a positive 8-5 record. They also finished second in the league in batting.

“We had the best regular season we’ve had yet. Our pitching and our hitting and everything came together and it was the most successful regular season we have had yet,” Gavin Nolin, a player for the Trappers, said.

Coming off a great regular season, the Trappers had to play in the NSRBL’s first ever wildcard playoff against the Unity Midgets.

They played a close game against Unity for the first few innings but managed to crack the game wide open in the third. They finished the game winning 11-2.

“It was really fun because this is the first year that the NSRBL has done a wildcard game format to get into playoffs. It was a new experience and it was pretty cool,” Nolin added.

Nolin said making the playoffs this year is a great reward for all the hard work that went into building the club up over the last three years.

“Most of our team came up from midget and didn’t really have a team to play with so the core of us sticking together and adjusting to a new league means a lot” Nolin said.

The Trappers played first of their three-game playoff series against the Wilkie Brewers on Tuesday.

Game one was a relatively close game until the Trappers had one a defensive lapse which saw them give up five runs in the third inning. They scored three back in the sixth inning but couldn’t complete the comeback. The game ended up 6-3.

Game two of the series goes tonight and Nolin said they are going to put their best foot forward and make a run at winning the series.

“We are really confident heading into tonight. Wilkie is a good team and they hit the ball well but we are sending our best pitcher to the mound, Jared Schmidt, so hopefully we can be effective. They are the best hitting team in the league and I think we are second so tonight is going to be a slugfest,” he said.
