Urban Treaty Day to be rife with celebration

Jun 24, 2019 | 5:00 PM

Fun in the sun and community comradery are two things surely to be in abundance at the Battlefords Agency Tribal Chiefs’ (BATC) fourth Annual Urban Treaty Day celebration.

The event will take place at the Dekker Centre and Rotary Plaza. BATC Director of Communications Alexis Christensen said the event offers an opportunity for those living in the Battlefords to come together, while allowing those who live far from their First Nations to receive their treaty annuity payments.

“I know specifically of some people that are in reserves from other provinces and they’re maybe not getting home as often as they might like,” Christensen said. “If someone didn’t make it to home to theirs, they’re able to come to this [Treaty Day] and still receive their treaty annuity payment.”

Christensen said the day will feature all kinds of celebration.

There will be a mini powwow competition with teepees set up adjacent to the Dekker Centre. There will also be free soup and bannock available all throughout the day along with vedors and various activities. This year’s event will serve as the first to feature land-based learning.

About 700 people attended last year, with similar numbers expected Wednesday.

“People like the idea of getting together, and that’s becoming more of the norm, to have these big community events,” Christensen said. “It’s the type of event where you can just pull up a chair and visit, and have some soup and bannock and good conversations with everyone around. It’s just a happy day in the Battlefords.”

Urban Treaty Day runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 26.
