Battlefords’ golfer Colby Friedrich was in Yorkton this weekend for the annual Future Links Prairie Championship.

Featuring 46 golfers, aged 11 to 18, this year marked Friedrich’s second time at the event.

Friedrich opened the tournament with back-to-back 81s in each of the first two rounds, before finishing inside the top five with a 73 on Sunday. His strong end helped solidify a personal best at the tournament, bettering his initial appearance two years ago.

The Battlefords’ product said his showing Sunday should only bode well for his game moving forward.

“Friday and Saturday I just didn’t quite have my best, but that’s to be expected; it’s only my second tournament of the year and there’s going to be a bit of rust,” Friedrich said. “Day three I shot a good round [so] I can leave on a good note going into my next tournament.”

He said he went to the range Saturday night after round two to “get a few things figured out,” a move he credits with helping account for his strong finish.

The North Battleford Comprehensive High School senior has been golfing for as long as he can remember. Friedrich, 17, said he has been around the sport, since he was only a few years old.

“I’ve been going out to the course since I was about two or three years old with my dad, so it’s been a long time,” he said. “I just never went away from it; now 15-years later, it’s always been a big part of my life and will always be.”

Asked what it is about the sport that he enjoys most, Friedrich said it’s not just one thing, but rather the experience at large, that drew him in.

“I think it’s just such a peaceful place to be out on the golf course, [and] out in nature,” he said. “There are so many nice golf courses in our province, and I think that you can never stop improving in the game of golf, so that’s always a big thing.”

Friedrich will now shift his focus to Swift Current this weekend for a tournament at Chinook Golf Course June 22 and 23.
